What is Community Health Initiative?
The Community Health Initiative is a venture started by two medical school classmates and emergency medicine doctors, Chris Buresh and Josh White, who had traveled to Leogane, Haiti to provide short-term medical care to those in the city and in villages nearby. Chris Buresh had started taking trips years ago during medical training in North Carolina, and he continued his relationship with Leogane when he moved to Iowa. He subsequently shared his passion for the people of Leogane with Josh White, who quickly developed the same desire to provide medical assistance to the people of Leogane.
They decided that they could best make a long-term impact by establishing continuity of medical care in a limited number of local villages and in the town of Leogane, where they will return with medical teams regularly each season. They also plan to establish a medical record system to optimize care for the Haitian people and to develop ongoing research projects in the country to identify unique medical needs and optimal remedies. In June, 2009, Josh and Chris approached World Wide Village with their vision and plan, and a partnership was developed. The Community Health Initiative complements the ongoing multidisciplinary efforts of World Wide Village to improve life for the Haitian people through clean water, affordable and nutritious food, safe shelter, and economic growth through microenterprise.
