One School at a Time

Since the devastating January 12th earthquake, World Wide Village, Inc. has used funds donated by generous individuals, such as you, for relief efforts.  Children have been fed, medical needs have been tended to, and hope has flourished.  Through it all, the faith and resiliency of the Haitian people has been inspiring.

In the hardest hit areas, tent cities have sprung up.  In order to try to provide them with some sense of normalcy, makeshift schools are being set up in open areas under tarps. In some cases, schools administered by World Wide Village reopened within two weeks following the earthquake.  In others, the building was completely destroyed and those classes did not restart until months later.  In Leogane, temporary structures were not available until just this past week.

The Haitian government and aid groups estimate that more than 95 percent of the schools in the quake zone were destroyed.  Armed with that knowledge and given that education is at the heart of what WWV is about, we have made building schools in Haiti a high priority.

The challenges we and our Haitian brothers and sisters face in rebuilding Haiti are immense, but we trust that future outcome will outweigh those challenges as education leads the way out of extreme poverty.  Please consider joining our “Believing in Haiti…One School at a Time” campaign.  Our first three projects are as follows:

Luly Primary School
Located approximately 45 miles north of Port-au-Prince, Luly Primary School is open, but classes are being temporarily held in a tarp and banana leaf shelter because of earthquake damage to the actual structure.  The reconstruction of Luly will include a six-classroom school, multipurpose pavilion, and suitable latrine facilities.

Coeur School
From 2008, this school (located in Dumont,125 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince)  has grown from 120 to 252 children, and is expected to continue growing.  Some of the school’s current classrooms hold 60 students.  The expansion of the Coeur School will include the addition of three classrooms (totaling nine altogether), an administrative office, a storage room, and a multi-purpose pavilion.  The pavilion will host student lunches, as well as community events and church services.

Lott Carey School
This school is in Leogane, approximately 35 miles west of Port-au-Prince and near the earthquake’s epicenter.  This community was hard-hit by the natural disaster: 35,000-40,000 lives were lost and 90% of its structures were destroyed, including the Lott Carey School.  Though 69 children were attending this school before the earthquake, that number is expected to grow drastically as students from the area transfer from their destroyed schools.  The reconstruction and expansion of Lott Carey Primary School willincrease the school from three classrooms to six large classrooms.

Please consider joining us as we Believe in Haiti by rebuilding and improving schools.  Perhaps your co-workers will join together to support a portion of a school project.  Maybe school children in your neighborhood are interested in working to support fellow students in Haiti. Possibly your small group or other church group will adopt a classroom and begin a meaningful relationship with a teacher and students in a Haitian classroom.

Know that your gifts – large or small – will be spent to help impact a nation.
